Frequently Asked Questions about Rugs

An Oriental, Persian, or Antique rug can be a big investment. We want to make sure you are equipped with all the knowledge you need to properly care for your investment. Check out our FAQs for helpful information as well as answers to common questions about our Rug Cleaning and Repair services.

For a household with light traffic, we recommend cleaning your rug once every two years. For homes with children, we recommend an annual cleaning. Regular and consistent rug cleaning by a professional is the most vital factor in maintaining your rug and its value. Plus, did you know it’s good for your health? Studies show that rugs trap debris, dust, allergen, molds, bacteria and all types of pollutants. Exposure to these particles can cause illness and aggravate allergies. What does this tell us? That cleaning your rug is not only good for its lifespan, but it’s good for your family’s health too!

We clean all types of rugs; Oriental rugs, wool rugs, silk rugs, hand-woven rugs, braided rugs, kilims, flat weaves, broadlooms, and the list goes on and on. Different types of rugs have specific cleaning methods and processes based on their material, construction method, and so on. Our team has expertise in all of these unique cleaning methods. If you have any cleaning questions or concerns feel free to call us.

Our cleaning process includes expert techniques specifically for your type of rug and level of cleaning required, so these means some processes may vary. Typically, steps include:

  1. Vacuuming to ensure all dirt and dust is removed
  2. Thoroughly soaking the rug with water until this water runs clear
  3. Scrubbing with a brush and gentle detergent
  4. Rinsing again with water
  5. Using a squeegee brush to remove additional water
  6. Wet vac to remove water
  7. Cleaning and combing the tasseled edges
  8. Blow drying the rug
  9. Delivering it back to your home

We use special, gentle cleaning agents in combination with heavy dust removal and water saturation. This is the best method to guarantee removal of stains and odor from your rugs without causing any damage.

The answer to this completely depends on the type of stain. Please check out our stain removal guide for instructions on how to remove different types of stains on rugs. If you have already tried all of these methods, it may be time for a professional to take a look. Please contact us for pick-up or bring your rug in for us to inspect it. One of our Rug Cleaning experts will be able to tell you exactly how we can remove the stain and get your rug back to perfect condition. If you choose not to remove the stain, just keep in mind that this will contribute to the devaluation of your rug in the future.

Yes! We have an excellent track record of removing both pet stains and the corresponding odor from rugs. The most important factor to removing pet stains and odor is how quickly we can start working on it. If you act immediately and contact us right after your pet stains the rug and before it dries, we can easily remove the stain. If the stain is very old, our team will have to inspect it to decide on next steps.

Pets can easily damage your rugs, either by urinating on them or chewing them to pieces. There are a few ways you can try to deter your pet from causing this damage. If you just purchased a new rug, you can spray a pet deterrent formula around your rug. This can be purchased at your local pet store. If your dog is trying to chew your rug, consistently provide them with toys so they have other (less expensive!) options.

It is ideal for most rugs to have a rug pad. Most surfaces in the home are slick, adding a rug pad will prevent you or your rug from sliding around. Rug pads can also be used as cushioning to make the rug more comfortable to walk on. Our team can help you pick out the best rug pad for your needs.

If your rug is properly cared for, it can last for generations! Many rugs are passed down as treasured heirlooms from one family member to the next. To keep your rug around this long it needs professional cleaning on a regular basis.

No, we do not dry clean your rugs. The reason for this is because it could be extremely damaging to your valuable rug; you should never take your rug to the dry cleaners! Dry cleaning can damage a rug’s fiber by removing its protective lanolin. Taking your rug to a dry cleaner is like taking a fur coat to a car wash; it’s a very risky choice and you may not get good (or repairable) results.

Due to the fibers in your rug, it can easily attract mildew. If caught early, our team can remove mildew and the unpleasant musty smell that comes with it. If the mildew is deep in the foundation of the rug, we will need to do an in-person inspection to see what we can do next.

There are various factors to look for to decipher the quality of a rug, and it also depends on the style of the rug. A few things that typically show quality are the number and intricacy of the knots, the design, and the caliber of the wool used (it should feel oily and full of lanolin).

Knowing the difference between these various rug constructions is important, as it will often affect the pricing and value.

  • Hand-woven is a blanket term used to describe all the other types listed above.
  • Hand-tufted and Hand-hooked are pretty much the same processes. They are made using a grid-like backing, and the yarn is looped and tied in patterns on the grid. The back is often glued and covered with canvas. The main difference between these two is that in the final stage of production, a hand-tufted carpet is shaved on top, so you see the pile.
  • Hand-knotted rugs are typically what are thought of when someone hears the term “handwoven.” These rugs are tightly knotted by hand so that there is no need for glue to hold the carpet together. They can last for many generations. Since they take so long to create, they are usually more expensive.
